Protecting Japanese Imports

Protecting Japanese Imports for Life on UK Roads

Japanese imports are often chosen for their reliability, specification and excellent overall condition. However, vehicles originally manufactured for the Japanese market may not have the level of corrosion protection needed for long-term use on British roads.

At Shropshire Mechanical Services, we specialise in preparing and protecting Japanese imported vehicles using professional Dinitrol corrosion-prevention products.

As an approved Dinitrol application centre, we provide a thorough two-day treatment designed to protect the underside, chassis rails and internal cavities of your vehicle.

Why Japanese Imports Need Additional Protection

Japan generally uses less road salt than the UK, and many vehicles imported from Japan have spent their lives in comparatively favourable conditions.

Once introduced to British roads, the underside can be exposed to:

  • Road salt and winter treatment chemicals
  • Persistent rain and moisture
  • Mud and agricultural contamination
  • Water trapped behind undertrays and wheel-arch liners
  • Corrosion inside chassis rails, box sections and enclosed cavities

A vehicle that arrives in exceptionally clean condition can begin deteriorating surprisingly quickly if it is not properly protected. The best time to treat a Japanese import is before significant corrosion develops.

Vehicles We Commonly Protect

Our Japanese import underbody protection service is suitable for a wide range of vehicles, including:

  • Toyota Land Cruiser
  • Toyota Hilux
  • Toyota Alphard and Vellfire
  • Toyota Hiace
  • Mitsubishi Delica
  • Mitsubishi Shogun and Pajero
  • Nissan Elgrand
  • Nissan Patrol
  • Subaru Forester
  • Suzuki Jimny
  • Mazda Bongo
  • Imported campervans, pickups and 4x4s

Other Japanese makes and models can also be treated. Contact us with your registration number and vehicle details to discuss the most suitable package.

More Than Simply Spraying the Underside

Effective corrosion protection depends on preparation. Applying underseal over dirt, moisture, loose rust or removable components can trap contamination and leave vulnerable areas untreated.

Our process takes two full working days because we prepare the vehicle correctly before applying any protective coating.

Our Two-Day Treatment Process

Initial Inspection

Before beginning, we inspect the underside and assess the condition of the chassis, floorpan, suspension mounting areas and existing coatings. If we discover significant corrosion, damage or previous unsuitable underseal, we will discuss it with you before carrying out additional work.

Internal Cavity and Chassis Protection

Before steam cleaning, Dinitrol ML is injected into accessible chassis rails, box sections and internal cavities.

Dinitrol ML is water-repellent and designed to creep into seams, joints and difficult-to-access areas. Treating the cavities first ensures the enclosed sections are protected before water is introduced during cleaning.

This stage is particularly important on:

  • Chassis rails
  • Crossmembers
  • Box sections
  • Door and sill cavities
  • Seams and overlapping panels
  • Other enclosed areas where moisture can collect

Removal of Undertrays and Wheel-Arch Liners

Undertrays, wheel-arch liners and other necessary components are removed to expose the metalwork behind them. These hidden areas can hold mud and moisture. Simply spraying over plastic covers does not protect the vehicle properly.

Thorough Steam Cleaning

The underside is thoroughly steam cleaned to remove road dirt, mud, salt, grease and loose contamination. This allows us to inspect the metalwork more accurately and creates a clean surface for the remaining preparation and protective products.

Complete Drying

Following cleaning, the vehicle is thoroughly dried using high-powered air blowers. Protective coatings should not be applied over trapped moisture. Particular attention is given to seams, chassis sections and areas behind removed components.

Rust Removal and Surface Preparation

Any loose rust, scale or failing coating is mechanically removed. Selective abrasive blasting may be used where appropriate to properly prepare localised corrosion. The level of preparation required depends on the vehicle’s age and condition. Any extensive repairs or additional work will be discussed before proceeding.

Careful Masking

Before application, components that must not be coated are carefully protected. This includes:

  • Brake components
  • Brake lines
  • Exhaust components
  • Drivetrain components where appropriate
  • Electrical connections
  • Service points and identification labels
  • Other unsuitable mechanical areas

Application of Dinitrol Protection

The appropriate Dinitrol products are professionally applied to the prepared underside, paying close attention to seams, exposed metalwork, mounting points and corrosion-prone areas. The products used may vary depending on the construction and condition of the vehicle.

Reassembly and Final Inspection

Once the application is complete, removed undertrays, wheel-arch liners and other components are refitted. The vehicle then receives a final inspection before it is released.

Protect Your Import Before Corrosion Takes Hold

Many Japanese imports arrive in far better condition underneath than an equivalent vehicle that has spent its life on British roads. Professional protection helps preserve that advantage.

Treating the vehicle early can:

  • Reduce the risk of corrosion developing
  • Protect vulnerable seams and enclosed cavities
  • Help preserve the chassis and structural areas
  • Maintain the vehicle’s condition and value
  • Avoid the need for more extensive preparation later
  • Provide confidence when using the vehicle throughout the year

Japanese Import Underbody Protection

Older and Previously Undersealed Imports

Older Japanese imports can still be protected, but they may require additional preparation.

Previous coatings must be inspected carefully. Some underseal products can conceal rust, contamination or moisture, particularly when they have been applied without removing undertrays or preparing the surface correctly.

We will assess the vehicle and explain what can realistically be achieved before starting treatment.

Dinitrol Approved Application Centre

Shropshire Mechanical Services is proud to be an approved Dinitrol application centre. This accreditation confirms that our preparation standards, application processes and working methods meet Dinitrol’s requirements.

Your Japanese import is treated by technicians who understand that preparation is just as important as the final coating.

Four-Year Guarantee

Qualifying underbody protection packages include a four-year guarantee, subject to the applicable terms, inspections and maintenance requirements. We will explain the guarantee conditions when your vehicle is booked.

Courtesy Car Available

A complimentary courtesy car can be provided when required, subject to availability. Customers are responsible for arranging temporary insurance cover. Alternatively, we can arrange the necessary cover for £45.
