Not all underbody protection treatments are the same.
The products being applied are important, but preparation, equipment, experience, application methods and attention to detail are what ultimately determine the quality of the finished treatment.
At Shropshire Mechanical Services, underbody protection and corrosion prevention have become core specialities of our business.
We’ve invested heavily in the people, equipment and processes required to provide a comprehensive corrosion protection service, with one overriding philosophy:
Our ambition is simple:
That’s a big ambition, and we don’t expect customers to believe it simply because we say it.
We intend to earn that reputation through the quality of our work, one vehicle at a time.
There is a huge difference between simply applying underseal and carrying out a professional corrosion protection treatment.
Anyone can make the underside of a vehicle look freshly coated.
What matters is what’s underneath it.
One of our biggest frustrations within the industry is seeing underbody coatings used to disguise problems rather than prevent them.
Applying a thick coating over existing corrosion, dirt, moisture or poorly prepared metal may make a vehicle look impressive initially, but that’s not our idea of vehicle preservation.
Our philosophy is different:
Years of mechanical experience have taught us the importance of keeping vehicles serviceable and inspectable.
That’s why preparation forms such a significant part of our treatment.
Depending on the vehicle and its condition, this can include:
What happens before the coating goes on is every bit as important as the coating itself.
Some corrosion protection treatments require vehicles to remain in the workshop for three, four or even more days.
We don’t believe the number of days a vehicle spends in a workshop should automatically be used as a measure of the quality of the treatment.
What matters is what actually happens during that time.
Different companies use different equipment, staffing levels, drying methods and processes.
For example, a process relying heavily on natural drying may require significantly more waiting time between stages.
We’ve invested in high-powered forced-air drying equipment, allowing us to actively remove moisture following cleaning rather than simply leaving a vehicle sitting in the workshop waiting to dry naturally.
Where corrosion requires more substantial preparation, we can also carry out selective bead blasting, allowing us to concentrate on affected areas efficiently and thoroughly.
Our normal full treatment therefore takes two working days.
That doesn’t mean we’re doing less.
We would never shorten a treatment simply to get another vehicle through the workshop.
Equally, we don’t believe in keeping a vehicle for additional days simply to make a treatment sound more comprehensive.
It’s easy to assume that a four-day treatment must be twice as thorough as a two-day treatment.
It isn’t that simple.
Additional time may be required because of drying methods, equipment, staffing, workshop processes or simply the way a particular treatment has been organised.
The process should determine the time required — not the marketing.
Two organised working days with the correct people, equipment and processes can achieve far more than additional days spent waiting between stages.
The first day is heavily focused on preparation.
Undertrays, wheel arch liners and other necessary components are removed to provide access to areas that would otherwise remain hidden.
The underside is then inspected so we can assess the condition of the vehicle before treatment begins.
Before introducing water during the cleaning process, appropriate chassis sections and internal cavities are treated using Dinitrol ML.
Because Dinitrol ML is water-repellent, this means we’re protecting internal areas before getting the underside of the vehicle wet.
The underside is then thoroughly cleaned.
Rather than relying solely on natural drying, we use our high-powered blower system to actively remove moisture from the underside, seams and difficult-to-reach areas.
Existing corrosion is mechanically prepared, with selective bead blasting used where appropriate.
Once preparation is complete, areas that shouldn’t receive coating are carefully masked.
This includes brakes, brake lines, exhaust components and other sensitive or serviceable parts.
With the vehicle properly prepared, the appropriate Dinitrol corrosion protection products are professionally applied.
Particular attention is given to seams, vulnerable areas and sections known to be susceptible to corrosion.
Once application is complete, the treatment is inspected, previously removed components are correctly refitted and the vehicle undergoes our final quality checks before being returned to the customer.
We’re proud to be a Dinitrol Approved Application Centre.
We use professional Dinitrol corrosion prevention products throughout our treatment process and have developed our service around thorough preparation and correct application.
For us, being an approved application centre isn’t simply a badge to display.
It’s part of our commitment to providing a professional corrosion protection service that our customers can have confidence in.
Our full underbody protection treatment is backed by our 4-Year Guarantee.
We don’t want our responsibility for a treatment to end the moment the vehicle leaves our workshop.
We want customers to have confidence in both the products being applied and the people applying them.
Underbody protection isn’t simply about knowing how to operate a spray gun.
Understanding the vehicle underneath the coating is incredibly important.
That’s one of the biggest strengths of our team.
Between us, we bring together:
Mechanical engineering.
Heavy mechanical experience.
Aircraft engineering.
Vehicle maintenance qualifications.
Military experience.
An artistic eye for detail.
Years of hands-on underbody protection experience.
They’re very different backgrounds, but they all contribute towards one standard:
Shropshire Mechanical Services is owned and run by Daniel Williamson.
Daniel is NVQ Level 2 trained in Mechanical Engineering and has spent almost 10 years working as a heavy mechanic.
Years spent repairing, inspecting and working underneath vehicles have given him an understanding of where corrosion develops, common weak points and the difference between genuine corrosion prevention and work that simply disguises what’s underneath.
His mechanical background also means he understands what MOT testers are looking for.
He understands the importance of keeping structural areas and critical components inspectable, recognising previous repairs and identifying the difference between genuine protection and attempts to cover up poor workmanship or deterioration.
That experience has heavily influenced the way our underbody protection service has developed.
Daniel’s priority isn’t finding ways to make the treatment cheaper or simply getting more vehicles through the workshop.
It’s finding ways to make the treatment better.
That means continually investing in:
Better equipment.
Better preparation.
Better processes.
Better training.
Better people.
Better quality control.
And ultimately:
Daniel’s philosophy for the business is straightforward:
We know that reputation can’t simply be claimed.
It has to be earned.
Ellen has been carrying out underbody protection treatments with us for a long time and has become an integral part of the service.
As our Quality Assurance Manager, Ellen helps ensure that the standards of preparation, application and finishing remain consistently high across the vehicles passing through our workshop.
Her background brings something quite unique to our team.
Ellen is ex-military, bringing discipline, an exceptional work ethic and a methodical approach to everything she does.
She’s also an artist.
That artistic background gives Ellen an exceptional eye for detail — something that translates remarkably well into underbody protection.
She notices the little things.
An awkward section that needs another look.
An area of masking that could be improved.
A difficult-to-reach section that deserves additional attention.
Or simply something that doesn’t quite meet the standard we’re trying to achieve.
Ellen works incredibly hard and her attention to detail makes her ideally suited to overseeing quality assurance.
Before we’re satisfied with a vehicle, the question isn’t simply:
“Is it finished?”
It’s:
Tony joined our team following a career as an aircraft engineer.
Aviation engineering requires precision, methodical working practices and extremely high attention to detail.
Those qualities transfer exceptionally well into specialist corrosion protection.
Tony’s engineering background complements our processes particularly well when it comes to inspection, preparation and making sure work is carried out correctly rather than simply quickly.
Callum has completed his Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications in Vehicle Maintenance.
He brings current automotive training and mechanical knowledge into the team.
His understanding of vehicle components and construction is particularly useful when vehicles need to be stripped, inspected, prepared and correctly reassembled during the treatment process.
We’re extremely proud of the team we’ve built.
Our backgrounds might be very different, but everyone contributes something valuable.
Mechanical knowledge helps us understand what we’re protecting.
Engineering experience encourages methodical working.
Military experience brings discipline.
Artistic ability brings an incredible eye for detail.
Vehicle maintenance training ensures an understanding of modern automotive systems and components.
And years of practical underbody protection experience bring all of those skills together.
Trust matters when you’re handing someone the keys to a cherished or valuable vehicle.
We’re proud to be trusted by a number of classic, prestige and specialist vehicle companies who choose Shropshire Mechanical Services to carry out underbody protection and corrosion prevention work on vehicles in their care.
Our team has experience working around exceptionally rare and valuable vehicles, including vehicles and collections valued in the millions of pounds.
When you’re working on vehicles of this calibre, there is no room for careless preparation, unnecessary overspray or a “that’ll do” attitude.
Every detail matters.
It’s a responsibility we take extremely seriously.
And the standards required when working with these vehicles have helped reinforce the standards we apply throughout our underbody protection service.
The monetary value of a vehicle doesn’t determine the amount of care we put into it.
Whether we’re protecting an exceptionally rare classic, a prestige vehicle, a Japanese import, a working 4×4, a camper or simply someone’s pride and joy, our approach remains the same:
Being trusted by companies responsible for exceptionally valuable vehicles is something we’re incredibly proud of.
But perhaps more importantly, it demonstrates why we’ve built our service around careful preparation, experienced people and dedicated quality assurance.
Japanese imports are a particular speciality of ours.
Many vehicles imported from Japan arrive in remarkably good overall condition.
However, they may not have received the same level of long-term corrosion protection required for years of exposure to British weather, moisture and winter road salt.
That makes early protection particularly important.
We regularly work with imported 4x4s, MPVs, campers and other Japanese vehicles and understand the areas that require particular attention.
Protecting a clean import before significant corrosion develops can be considerably easier and more effective than waiting until deterioration has already taken hold.
We’ve expanded our team, which means we can now complete up to four full underbody protection packages per week.
But increased capacity doesn’t mean rushing vehicles through the workshop.
Quite the opposite.
Having additional skilled people allows us to divide the workload properly, streamline each stage and maintain attention to detail without compromising our two-day treatment process.
We don’t want to become a production line.
We want to become more efficient at maintaining the standard we’ve set ourselves.
Not every vehicle needs our complete underbody protection package.
Sometimes a customer simply has a particular area they’re concerned about.
This could include a:
We’re happy to discuss targeted corrosion protection treatments without requiring customers to purchase the complete package.
Because every vehicle and situation is different, these treatments are Price on Application (POA).
We understand that being without your vehicle for two working days can be inconvenient.
A complimentary courtesy car can therefore be provided when required, subject to availability.
Customers are responsible for arranging suitable temporary insurance cover.
Alternatively, we can arrange temporary cover for £45.
We actively encourage customers to compare us.
But don’t compare companies purely on price or how many days they keep your vehicle.
Compare the process.
Ask what’s actually being done.
Are the undertrays removed?
Are wheel arch liners removed where necessary?
Are internal chassis sections and cavities treated?
What happens to existing corrosion before it’s coated?
Is blasting equipment available where required?
How is the vehicle dried after cleaning?
Is it simply left to dry, or is dedicated drying equipment used?
Are brakes and brake lines properly masked?
Are exhaust components and sensitive areas protected from overspray?
What products are being used?
Who is actually carrying out the work?
Does the team have genuine mechanical and engineering experience?
Is there a quality-assurance process?
Does the company regularly work with classic, prestige and high-value vehicles?
Is the company an approved application centre?
Is the treatment backed by a written guarantee?
Those questions tell you considerably more about the quality of an underbody protection treatment than simply asking:
If your main priority is finding the cheapest possible underseal treatment, we’re probably not the right company for you.
Proper corrosion protection requires time.
It requires equipment.
It requires quality materials.
It requires experience.
And most importantly, it requires preparation and people who genuinely care about the finished result.
We’re also not interested in artificially making our treatment longer simply because a greater number of days sounds more impressive.
